Cleaning Instructions

EnviroLeather™ has a superior, stain resistant, durable finish. It is designed for easy care and cleaning. The high tech polymer formulation also provides excellent chemical resistance. To maximize the lifespan of your material it is recommended that a regular cleaning schedule be maintained to keep the surface free from dirt and debris. Vacuuming or light brushing is recommended to prevent dust and soil buildup. Spills and stains should be cleaned as soon as possible. Avoid saturation with liquids. Remove any remaining cleaning, or disinfectant solution with a cloth and clean water. Then, dry the surface thoroughly. Use a soft lint-free cloth or towel and avoid steel wool and cleaners containing abrasives.

Ordinary Dirt and Water-Soluble Stains: Clean with mild soap and water. 

Stubborn Stains: Remove with 70% rubbing alcohol or 409 cleaner.  *

Disinfect: Disinfect with 20% bleach solution.

It may not correlate with facility use conditions, as it is difficult to duplicate the effect of multiple cleanings per day over a period of several years. Cleaning methods & protocols, direct exposure to heat and sunlight along with how the furniture is being used, create variables that could affect performance over time. The cleaning agent supplier should be consulted to determine appropriateness for specific applications. All cleaning label instructions and precautions should be followed. Therefore, this chart is only a reference guide for the selection of appropriate cleaning products. It is not a recommendation, or approval, for any specific cleaner or cleaning method. We offer these results along with our assurance that the formulation of EnviroLeather™ exhibits superior chemical resistance compared to most faux leathers and has proven to hold up well in 99% of applications.

BIFMA HCF 8.1 Health Care Furniture Design – Guidelines for Cleanability – was released in October 2014. This is the first cleanability guideline version released by BIFMA. The purpose of this test method is to validate the resistance and compatibility of materials to different cleaning/disinfecting methods such as chemical, UV light and steam. This guideline does not address disinfection effectiveness; only the impact of the disinfection process on the furniture surfaces. The tests and acceptance levels in this guideline are based on a seven year furniture life span considering a onetime per day cleaning / disinfection process.

BIFMA HCF 8.1 has four tests in order to evaluate the surface resistance to cleaning process encountered in health care environments.

6 – Screening of finishes to liquid cleaner resistance

  • The surface to be tested is covered by a cotton cloth saturated with the cleaner to be tested. The cotton is then covered with a glass watch for a soaking period. Finally, the sample is cleaned and dried for evaluation
  • The proposed reagents are as follow1:
    • Distilled water (control)
    • Bleach
    • Hydrogen Peroxide
    • Quaternary Ammonium
    • Alcohol – Isopropyl
    • Phenolic
  • Acceptance criteria: The surface should not present any color change, signs of tackiness, softening, cracking or crazing. Maximum gloss, ASTM D523, is also part of the requirements.

7 – Screening of Coated Fabrics to Liquid Cleaner Resistance

  • Number of samples: 1 per cleaner
  • Test method: 6 times per day and for a 14 working days period, the cleaner is applied on the sample simulating a cleaning motion.
  • Acceptance criteria: The surface should not present any signs of cracking, peeling, bubbling. A slight change in color or surface finish is acceptable.

8 – Resistance of Furniture to Steam Exposure

  • Test method: The test sample is laid flat for steam exposure. The sample is then dried for evaluation.
  • Acceptance criteria: A slight change in color or surface finish is acceptable

9 – Resistance of Furniture to UV Lights

  • Test method: Half of the sample is covered for control. Sample is exposed to UVC light for 291 kJ/m2.
  • Test assessment: Initial and final L*a*b* readings should be established. A delta E of 2.0 or less is acceptable. A slight change in color or surface finish is also acceptable.

Ultraviolet radiation (UV-C) systems deliver a specific dose of UV-C light to inactivate pathogens on hospital surfaces when incorporated with routine cleaning and disinfection protocols.  Our materials PASSES BIFMA HCF 8.1-2014 Section 9.

Stain Resistance Information

In general, EnviroLeather™ has very good stain resistance and stains can be easily removed. Removal is dependent upon color of the material, length of exposure and severity of staining. With any material, the sooner you are able to get to a stain the better chances you have of removing it. Thus, we cannot warranty against staining, but we can give you some honest information to work with.

Our material passes blue jean fabric (indigo dye) crocking. This basically means that when both a dry and a wet piece of blue denim material is rubbed on a white piece of Enviroleather™, there is no pigment transfer of indigo dye from the blue jean pieces.

In addition to this, we also dripped indigo dye on the surface of our material (California and Ink Guard) and did cleanings immediately, after 5 minutes, and 2 hours. We tested this with 91% alcohol, Clorox wipes, and Fantastik Scrubbing Bubbles. The indigo dye came off completely with all three cleaners.
